Rotation 5.28.18

Welcome to the Weekly Rotation where I share my weekly playlist and what new jams I'm listening to this week! Check out this week's rotation!

A playlist featuring Jessie J, Jorja Smith, G-Eazy, and others

Albums & EPs:

This week there were 3 big album releases on my radar, Testing by A$AP Rocky, Shawn Mendes by Shawn Mendes, and R.O.S.E by Jessie J. The album that delivered the most was definitely Testing. This album is sonically dynamic because there is a lot of playing with sound and distorting sound, but not over stimulating. In fact, it's quite mellow as a whole body of work. My favorites on this album are the first track "Distorted Records," "Praise the Lord (Da Shine)," and "OG Beeper," which is such a bop, and "Black Tux, White Collar."

Shawn Mendes and Jessie J both had great tracks but as a whole were not as good as previous projects. For Shawn Mendes, I have to say I can tell he's getting more into his own sound, and interestingly enough that sounds is very groovy. They were many R&B tracks on this album as opposed to the more pop acoustic feel he had on his last two projects Handwritten and Illuminate. My favorites on Shwan Mendes are "Lost In Japan," "Particular Taste," and "Perfectly Wrong."

As for Jessie J, first things first, the woman can sing. I just want to get that out of the way because this isn't anything against her vocals, I just didn't like the split up EP style for R.O.S.E. It was hard to follow since it was 4 completely different bodies of work but they were connected. Each letter meant something different: R = Realisation, O = Obsession, S = Sex, E = Empowerment. I may have felt differently if I listened to them in one swoop but they were also released over a span of 4 days, so it felt choppy. I did love one track from each release "Think About That," "Petty," "Queen," and "I Believe in Love."

In terms of EP's there was one G-Eazy dropped The Vault on his birthday. Its fun has some cool features from the new generation in the Bay. My favorite track is "Wasabi."

Singles:

There weren't a lot of singles that stood out to me but my favorites were "February 3rd" by Jorja Smith, "Make Out In My Car" by Moses Sumney, "Fallingwater" by Maggie Rogers, and lastly new find "Girl" by Donna Missal.

Sidenote: Drake can we please just have the "Duppy Freestyle" as a single because what even is "I'm Upset?" I'm upset that was your next release after such a weekend as this. I had to get that off my chest.

Video of the Week:

So I almost lost hope, BUT Jennifer "Jenny from the Block" Lopez decided to grace us with a video for "Dinero" feature Cardi B and DJ Khalid. It is as ostentation as I expected it to be, but it is perfect for the song!
